The History of MaternityWise MaternityWise began in 2002 as a private childbirth support business. Our Founder and Director, Chris Anne Johnson was a strong homebirth advocate, and began a path toward midwifery. On this journey, she met other women on the same path who were attending births as a doula. This encouraged Chris Anne to become a certified labor doula. She continues to seek out learning opportunities whenever she can to slowly work toward attending women at home, though the growth of MaternityWise has caused her to step off the path toward homebirth midwifery while she focuses on helping women to become skilled caregivers in the doula community. Within a very short amount of time after becoming certified as a doula, Chris Anne began receiving requests to “mentor” new doulas and so began her adventure of training childbirth professionals. Before her interest in birth, Chris Anne had been learning about holistic ways to treat illness, alternative medicine and natural lifestyles relating to motherhood since 1995. Included in the benefits of training with MaternityWise are not only her maternity and health research, but her experience as a marketing and business growth educator, because she has also mastered the skill of web design including internet marketing and search engine ranking. She has provided this service and education to over 400 small business owners locally. By 2003, MaternityWise had already become known by families and birth workers as a great resource for pregnancy and parenting information. As time went on, the MaternityWise practice grew to include 2 homebirth midwifery students, 3 birth doulas, 2 postpartum doulas, a childbirth educator, a LaLeche League leader and had a number of outside referral resources such as lactation consultants, massage therapists, chiropractors and homebirth midwives from across the United States. In 2007, it was official. MaternityWise had reached the front pages of every major search engine and with the increasing exposure, had successfully begun to train and certify Postpartum Doulas. In January of 2008, MaternityWise will also begin to accept certification students for their Birth Doula program. Looking at the big picture, MaternityWise will begin their childbirth advocate certification in early 2008, followed by their childbirth educator, lactation consultant and ante-partum doula certification programs.
