The childbirth professional cannot help families with limited knowledge or knowledge that heavily leans on one extreme or another. A comprehensive amount of knowledge of conventional medical practices and the history/philosophy/reasons behind them is necessary so that mothers can make truly informed decisions for themselves and their families. In the same way, understanding holistic alternatives, how they work and how they can be incorporated in a family’s health care plan is an important part of the childbirth professionals’ training. Not having the ability to offer and adequately explain alternatives to the mainstream advice a family receives is an unbalanced, incomplete way to support them. We have a crisis right now in that this precious time surrounding the birth of a child has been overrun with commercialism and apathy toward education. The expectant family has the desire to read and learn and participate in their care, but the amount of profit-driven propaganda provided to them is overwhelming and given to them for free. They often times don’t even know that there is other information available to them. The U.S. has fallen to 41st place out of 52 industrialized countries for our infant mortality rates. We currently have a 33% cesarean rate when the rest of the world averages 5%. Families are falling apart because of the damaged bond between mother and child. Women’s birthing rights are being violated and the postpartum depression statistics have risen dramatically over the last 20 years. Something must be done. MaternityWise is excited to be part of the solution. What are our goals? A secure, healthy baby. A confident, self-honoring mother. A strong, peaceful family unit. Joy in the process.
